Messe Frankfurt against copying

Protection against brand and product piracy
Messe Frankfurt has been supporting exhibitors in the fight against counterfeiters since 2006.

“Messe Frankfurt against copying” is setting an example
Some 5,000 people came to the “Messe Frankfurt against copying” stand in Hall 4.1 for more information last year; following this success, the company made the decision to implement this campaign at trade fairs outside Germany as well.

In January 2006, Messe Frankfurt became the first trade fair organiser to launch a concerted campaign against product and brand piracy, a cooperative effort which was undertaken with its partners, the Office for Harmonization in the Internal Market: Trademarks and Designs, the German Patent and Trademark Office, the Anti-Product Piracy Campaign Committee of German Industry, the Plagiarius campaign, the Industrial Property Rights Department of German Customs and the European Commission’s Euro Info Centres (EIC). The “Messe Frankfurt against copying” initiative has since become a very successful institution which is part of all of Messe Frankfurt’s own events. In addition to consultation, the company also offers its customers legal support, including an emergency legal service to help them obtain preliminary injunctions.

The results of this initiative have been very positive. The number of confiscations has fallen markedly, while applications for design registration are increasing, an indication that the campaign is having an effect in both intended directions: not only is it a clear warning for all product counterfeiters, but it is also an effective provider of information for exhibitors.

This campaign has also had success outside the exhibition grounds. The German Patent and Trademark Office, for example, believes that one of the reasons for the eight percent increase in applications last year was the “Messe Frankfurt against copying” campaign.

The reaction abroad has also been positive, including in China and in the USA. The US Department of Commerce has started a “Stop Trade in Fakes” campaign for its exhibitors which is modelled on “Messe Frankfurt against copying”.

Messe Frankfurt is also expanding its campaign to include events held abroad. It has already begun the international rollout of this initiative with a stand offering advisory services at Automechanika Argentina and Automechanika Shanghai.

You will find more information on “Messe Frankfurt against copying” in the brochure which is available for download here. This brochure lists all of the key measures as well as the registration options for trademarks and designs. You can also find the contact details for law firms that can offer you assistance on location at the trade fair if required.
